If you are creating your own album, here at VDC Group we know you may have started to think about the artwork that will help it to fly off the shelves. If you’re a little stuck for ideas, why not look to some of the most iconic and creative album covers created in the past for some inspiration?
Abbey Road – The Beatles
The image of John, Paul, George and Ringo walking across a zebra crossing on Abbey Road is iconic. In fact, the location was given grade II listed status in 2010 for its cultural and historical importance. The band were originally intending to use Mount Everest as the location for the album cover, but time restraints forced them to make things a little more simple and step just outside of the studio for the photo.
Lesson to learn: sometimes, simple really is better. This simple image is now one of the most famous in the history of music.
Nevermind – Nirvana
Another album cover that often graces bedroom wall posters, Nevermind used the image of a 4-month old baby underwater, swimming towards a dollar bill on a fishhook. The premise may sound rather odd, but the result is a world-famous image that is still plastered on teenagers’ bedroom walls 25 years on from its release. Apparently, the idea came from the mind of lead singer Kurt Cobain who liked the idea of babies being born underwater.
Lesson to learn: if you have a strong idea, go with it! It may sound crazy, but who knows, one day teenagers may plaster your album cover on their walls.
Dark Side of the Moon – Pink Floyd
The Dark Side of the Moon album cover features a graphic of light hitting a prism, with a rainbow effect coming out the other side. Despite being released in 1973, the image is still a popular design, finding its way onto t-shirts and even skin in the form of tattoos. The image was partially inspired by the shows put on by Pink Floyd which often involved impressive light shows. As the band were particularly reclusive, the album cover became just as recognisable if not more recognisable than the faces of the band.
Lesson to learn: by incorporating an element of the band into this design, Pink Floyd ended up with an image that was synonymous with their name. They displayed just how important it is for an album design to perfectly represent the artist.
These are just a selection of some of the most iconic album covers of all time, but there are plenty more which are just as famous and creative.
