The primary reason that people use DVDs over CDs becomes apparent when you look into the storage capacity of each disc. DVDs have almost five gigabytes of capacity (4.7), whereas a CD contains significantly less than one gigabyte (700mb). This huge capacity, coupled with the same instantaneous availability of information, makes DVDs perfect for multimedia storage; such as film or presentation.
The popularity of DVDs as a data-carrying medium has increased exponentially over the years, and as a result the demand for DVD duplication has increased. The ability to carry around huge amounts of data, regardless of file type, and have it immediately available to view on several different devices is perfect for those that often travel and present for their job.
DVDs are also a fabulous promotional tool, and a high quality DVD can be a hugely effective advertisement for your business. Our on-body printing service can also personalise your DVDs, and give them an aesthetic that is in itself an excellent advert for your company, as well as being a clarification of your professional image.
Choosing between DVD Duplication and Replication
Depending on the amount of data required on each DVD, it is possible to utilise one side or both sides of the disc, or even a “dual layer” feature to ensure the greatest amount of information is included within the DVD.
- DVD replication technology allows for storage capacities 14 times greater than CD-ROMs, from 4.7 to 17 gigabytes.
- The encoding process converts both auto (AC-3 files) and video (MPEG – 2 files) to DVD format.
- The supplied DVD format can be basic or more advanced to include authoring elements, such as the creation of menus, chapter breaks, supplementary audio tracks, sub-titles and a variety of other features exclusive to DVD technology.
If you are looking for DVD duplication and replication for quantities of 500 discs or more, you can get the highest levels of quality whilst maintaining competitive prices. The process involves injection moulding each disc individually to ensure a perfect result every time. Combined with quick turnaround times, using replication becomes the obvious choice when you are looking to create a large number of DVDs.
Whereas DVD duplication can be more cost effective for smaller batches of DVDs, when you are looking for larger volumes (500 or more), then it is more cost-effective to choose DVD replication over duplication. In addition to the process being different, the DVDs produced are also different – resulting in a DVD-5, DVD-9 or DVD-10 being produced.
Replicating is different to the process of DVD duplication in a number of ways to ensure standardisation of data. Firstly a glass master copy is made from the original data, which other copies are to be made from. At this stage, the master disc and the original data is thoroughly checked to find any data corruption and ensure that the highest quality DVDs are produced. A stamper is made from the master copy, which is then used to create each DVD disc. Throughout the process, quality and accuracy is checked to ensure that each disc is a fully accurate copy of the original disc.
Size | Storage Capacity |
---|---|
DVD 5 | 4.7GB of data A single read side disc with one layer of data and a blank disc for the second layer to form a finished disc |
DVD 9 | 8.5GB of data A single read side disc with two layers forms a finished disc |
DVD 10 | 9.4GB of data A double read sided disc each side having a single layer of data, disc needs to be turned over at 4.7GB. |
